Your area rugs, whether machine-made, or hand-knotted “oriental” rugs, need to be professionally cleaned every 12 to 24 months. This cleaning, if done properly, prevents damage caused by soil and insects, such as rug moths, who lay their eggs in natural fiber rugs, where they then ” munch away” at your valuable rugs (see photos on this page).
However, not all carpet cleaning companies are adequately equipped or trained to clean area rugs properly. Our special facility (1330 Flynn Rd, Ste # E, Camarillo, CA 93012) is one of the few “Rug Cleaning Plants” in Southern California (see below).
Operated by IICRC AND Woolsafe USA Certified owner Dan Traub, we can clean any area rug, using “hand washing“ techniques, including our special “rug bath,” which can even soak out the nastiest pet odors and stains. This type of rug cleaning also rinses out “rug moth” larvae who, while in the larval stage, can make holes in your valuable rugs.
Although there are many “carpet and rug cleaners” around Camarillo, CA, none are rug cleaning experts who specialize in fine fabrics and oriental rugs. Who will you trust with your fine area rugs? Do you want an uneducated person who doesn’t know much about the construction and stability of your rug, who assumes that all fabrics are the same? He may boast that his “super cleaning product” will clean it all, but he doesn’t have a clue why some of the rugs he cleans change shape, shrink or bleed colors.
Most rug cleaning services are operated by carpet cleaning companies who use the same equipment to clean area rugs that they use to clean wall to-wall carpet. This is not an effective , or safe method for cleaning fine area rugs, or any area rug, for that matter. We at Four Seasons Rug Spa are IICRC certified to clean rugs, and we can also repair them!
Our 10-Step Rug Cleaning Process
Step 1: Pre-Inspection and Pick Up
We will professionally examine your rug, test for dye stability, and make an estimate for the cleaning. We will outline the expected results and cleaning “prescription”. Our company will come to your home to pick up your rug, or you may get our Rug Studio address to drop it off by visiting http://venturarugspa.com You will receive a “cash and carry” discount if we do not have to pick up and deliver your rug.
Step 2: Dry Soil Removal
Woven rugs, especially hand knotted rugs are designed to hide dry soil. A few years ago, the Eureka company did a study and found that a 9 x 12 rug could hide 87 pounds of dirt! WOW! We use a variety of techniques to “dust” the rugs from the front and back. Using a machine called the RUG BADGER, we first shake out all of the grit, sand, dirt and soils which can not be removed with water because they are insoluble. This is the most important step in cleaning any textile.
Step 3: Pre-Condition
Depending on fiber content and soiling type, the rug will be pre-treated to suspend and loosen the soils.
Step 4: Pre-Spot and Fringe Preparation
Any potentially difficult spots will be pre-treated with special solutions to increase chances of removal. The fringe is also pre-treated for maximum soil removal.
Step 5: Shampoo
Most rugs are pre-agitated with an Oriental Rug Shampoo that is especially designed to get maximum cleaning while protecting sensitive natural fibers.
Step 6: Rinse or Wash
Depending on the type of rug, it will be rinsed with extraction equipment on both sides, or washed in our rug bath designed especially for Oriental Rugs.
Step 7: Drying
Once the soil is rinsed away, the rug is dried flat or hung to dry in a controlled environment. Proper drying is essential to avoid unnatural shrinkage and wicking.
Step 8: Finishing
When the rug is dry, it is combed and finished with soft groomers made for specialty rugs.
Step 9: Fringe Detail/Whitening (optional-extra fee applies)
Some rugs may require an extra service in which we detail the fringes one more time, sometimes using special whitening products.
Step 10: Post Inspection and Delivery
Our cleaning specialist will give the rug a final inspection and release it for pick up or delivery. Also, your rug can be wrapped in brown craft paper to protect it from dust and environmental soils for short- term storage. We also have the option of LONG -TERM STORAGE WRAP.Upon delivery, we will lay out the rug for you.
