spills, spots and stains guide

Holiday Meals Can Stain Your Rugs and Carpet

Here’s a list of some common spills and some do it yourself instructions for getting them cleaned up so they don’t cause permanent stains. (note – if your carpets, rugs and upholstery are protected with a quality fabric or fiber protector applied by a certified cleaning company – there is far less chance of a permanent stain)

CAUTION-never scrub your textiles with brushes – and be careful with the dry cotton terry towels to block instead of scrubbing so as not to cause abrasion fiber blooming and damage.

Cranberry sauce

(also works for spots caused by cookies, candies and breads)

This is acidic and it has a higher chance of making a permanent stain- so if it does spill, make sure to blot with a dry cotton terry towel ASAP. Next, mix a few drops of common dish soap (for hand dishwashing not the automatic dishwasher kind) in a cup of warm water. Dip the corner of a dry cotton white terry towel in the solution and wring it out a little bit. Dab the stain with the wet corner of the towel. Repeat if necessary. If this does not work you can apply a very small amount of the solution directly to the stain but don’t get the area too wet.  Next block with the dry cotton terry towel.

Gravy – since this contains fats, make the dishwashing detergent solution a little stronger then the cranberry sauce remover instructions above. Follow the same steps as for the cranberry sauce, but when you were finished also neutralize the area as follows:

Mix a capful of white vinegar  ( must be white unflavored) with a cup of water. Dip the corner of a white cotton Terry towel in the solution and wring it out a little. Apply this to the fibers – simply to neutralize the detergent and make sure that a soapy residue was not left behind.

Red wine

(this also works for cranberry sauce if first method fails) Follow the instructions for the gravy spots except add a pinch of “Oxy Clean” powder to the detergent solution for the first wet step – and allow it to sit on the stain for 10 minutes before proceeding. BE CAREFUL WITH OXYCLEAN- DO NOT OVERUSE!

NOTE- spills with artificial food coloring will possibly require professional carpet, rug or upholstery cleaning service

we hope this is helpful – but you may need a professional cleaning by a certified company- and for the “most outstanding service experience ever”  in Ventura County or North Los Angeles, call us at Four Seasons for immediate service at 805-642-4784

Getting Stains Out Of Tile and Grout In Ventura County

Hard-surface flooring is a popular choice and is replacing wall-to-wall carpet as the leading seller in new flooring, in the United States. It is a really good choice when combined with soft textures such as wall-to wall carpet, area or Oriental rugs and sofas, which all need professional cleaning annually. But does tile and natural stone tile such as travertine or marble need professional cleaning? If so, how often? Who should you select to do the job, and what credentials should they carry?

tile and grout cleaning thousand oaks

The grout needs professional care after several years of normal use. Of you have pets maybe sooner. If the grout lines are much darker where you walk than they are near walls and/or under furniture or area rugs, then you need professional service.

The best system used cleaning tile and grout or natural stone- (which is different from honing and polishing)-

  • Your tile and grout is pre-treated with a special cleaning agent to break down oils and to brighten your grout. Then we use either a hand- brush or rotary brush machine to work it in or to pre-clean soiled tile surfaces.
  • Your tile is rinsed with very hot water which is pressurized to 100 PSI through a special rotary tool. This will extract all of the water into a recovery tank in our truck-mounted machine. Nothing sprays outside of the machine- there is no mess in your home.
  • This professional tile cleaning system removes ALL soil, greasy oils, and normal residues that have built up or soaked into the grout. If you have a grout stain or tile soil problem, this cleaning system will give amazing results. However, after cleaning there may be some permanent stains in the grout or the tile, or imperfections in the grout from when the grout was installed. We do highly recommend that you have the grout sealed as part of the job, after cleaning. Our grout sealer is superior to ones found in stores because it protects for years against that porous material soaking up soiled water during mopping, and oils from animals’ fur and feet.

NOTE: DO NOT EVER APPLY GROUT SEALER YOURSELF WITHOUT THOROUGHLY CLEANING THE GROUT.

NATURAL STONE

Travertine, marble and other natural stones can be professionally cleaned with this same system. Also- our polishing process goes way beyond a cleaning to actually remove scratches and bring back the original shine with diamond pads and powders.

Finally, make sure that the company you hire is reputable, local, and a certified firm with the IICRC because you should not trust their training of their technicians if they are not an IICRC Certified Firm.

Can an Old Area Rug Be Cleaned and Repaired?

A very nice lady from Thousand Oaks, CA came into our shop with a very dirty, frayed area rug. She said, “last time I sent it cleaning somewhere, it looked really dirty when I brought it, but it came out great.”  Well-the problem is, that was ten years ago. Since then she has not had it professionally cleaned and it obviously takes a lot of traffic.

This Area Rug Went Too Many Years Without Professional Cleaning

She said the rug was fifteen years old, and that it was wool, made by Karastan. She left the rug with us, for cleaning and repair, and my wife Sylvie told her we would be calling her with a quote on repairing all four edges.

Now I have done two attempts and test- cleaning one two-foot by two- foot corner. The dirt has been ground in for so many years that the cleaning results are just not spectacular, as they usually are in our company.

So, we will be calling this customer and referring her to someone who can sell her a new rug.

Much of the reason for my conclusion has to do with the actual value and origin of this carpet.

  • it is a machine-made wool with a synthetic ( latex and polypropylene) backing
  • the value (and quality) when it was new is inferior to a hand- woven “Oriental” rug
  • the soil had simply been left to accumulate for too many years and became a permanent stain-traffic area
  • the rug, since it contains latex, cannot be immersion- washed in our fresh water bath system
  • the frayed edges are a tell-tale sign that this machine- made carpet rug is ready for retirement (dumpster!)

We do specialize and the most thorough, squeaky-clean with no chemicals cleaning for any area rug. And, we often perform near- mriacles on some really dirty carpets. Our company is certified by Woolsafe USA as such. However, this one was just too far gone, given it’s original quality. Actually Karastan makes some very nice rugs, but this i one of their “moderately priced”  rugs.

Hope this is helpful- and if you ever have a question about area rugs or Oriental natural hand-made rugs such as Persian rugs in Ventura County please give us a call! Below you see an image our our wash process for hand-made rugs.

Perhaps you’ve been trying to clean them yourself with bottles and products you bought at the store but the spots keep coming back. Or perhaps the carpet cleaning company who you have hired remove the spots but then once the carpet dried they came back

At our company we offer a free return trip in the case of returning spots for 30 days, and while we are at your house we also make a meticulous effort to clean every soil or spotted area until all the dirt is out.

Why are returning spots in traffic lanes such a problem when people hire a carpet cleaning company?

The IICRC, the world’s largest certifying body for the cleaning industry -providing professional training, company certification and standardization, tells us that many steps must be performed by the cleaning technician in order to achieve a professional and long-lasting cleaning result.

However most carpet, rug, tile and upholstery cleaning companies skip at least half of the necessary steps for a great result.

At Four Seasons Carpet and Upholstery Cleaning, an IICRC CERTIFIED FIRM, we perform our own 12-step carpet cleaning process for maximum soil removal and maximum spot removal. It’s not a “quick- get-in-and-out” process. At our company we offer a free return trip in the case of returning spots for 30 days, and while we are at your house we also make a meticulous effort to clean every soil or spotted area until all the dirt is out.

Getting Holiday Cleaning, Protection and Sealer Done in Ventura County

Last night I got a voice mail at our office.  A customer had spilled egg nog on her new  light- colored area rug which she had recently spent over $1,000 on.  She wanted to know if we at Four Seasons Rug and Upholstery Care could get the spot out.

Oriental Rug Cleaning Camarillo

I gave her some advice on do-it-yourself initial spot cleanup, then we made an appointment to pick up the rug. I also told her about our rug and fabric protector service, and she is having the rug cleaned and protected by us. And, no, the spot would not come out 100% because the rayon fabric materials in the rug are very subject to permanent staining. However, now that we have treated the surface with our fabric protector, she and her rug are in much better position going forward through the holidays.

Another customer had us come over to do an estimate on tile and grout cleaning. She had had major renovation to the house and the contractor had soiled the tile and grout heavily. So, we have scheduled her for tile and grout cleaning AND grout sealing. This will prevent the grout from becoming permanently stained in the future.

Whether  you need Oriental rug cleaning, wool or synthetic area rug cleaning  (all expertly done at our Four Seasons Rug Care Studio in Camarillo), tile and grout cleaning, upholstery cleaning or carpet cleaning, we are clean and sober, smelling good, and ready to serve you!

Camarillo Dust Requires Regular Carpet Cleaning

Have you seen the smog in Camarillo, CA, and all over Ventura County this time of year? It is caused by farmers tilling their land to get  new crops planted in the early Autumn. This brown dirt actually gets in your house ,even with the windows closed. Embedding itself in your carpets, upholstery and floors, it is a huge source of allergens such as pollen and dust mites.

Q: How do you fix this problem?

A: Hire a company who is an “IICRC Certified Firm.”

iicrclogo

Unfortunately our industry, like many service industries, is filled with uneducated, uninformed and sometimes downright unscrupulous carpet cleaners. Hiring a company with this certification  provides you with some assurance that you will have someone come to your home who is reputable, experienced, educated in their field, uses the best systems and equipment, and who guarantees their work.

Our company has maintained this designation for over a decade!

Does Upholstered Furniture Need To Be Cleaned?

Most people don’t realize how much dust collects in the covering of their sofa and chairs. Over 12 months, professional cleaning becomes necessary. And the funny thing is, without a professional soiling test, you won’t notice the condition of your pieces because the soil is hidden. It forms a film over each “yarn”, hiding the colors and clinging to the surface.
Camarillo Upholstery Cleaning
That’s why vacuuming, while helpful, is no replacement for professional cleaning. Because of the dust in our home, oils from our bodies and that of our pets, annual maintenance is recommended by all major furniture manufacturers including Ethan Allen, one of the world’s premier furniture manufacturers.
When you hire a carpet cleaning company do upholstery cleaning, make sure they are certified by the IICRC. This is called a “Certified Cleaning Firm.”

Always hire a reputable company who has positive online reviews, a business license, and good local references.
Another issue is fabric protection: if the surface is not well- protected by a special finishing spray, it could lead to premature permanent staining. Aerosol cans should never be applied to your valuable furniture, this is something that a professional must do. The advantages of this include much better dust repellancy, less allergens clinging to the cushions, and another advantage is that spots and spills can be cleaned up easily with a home spotting kit. If your furniture was protected when you bought it, just remember that the areas you sit on or come in contact with frequently are subject to traffic wear. In those areas, the fabric protection wears off in one to two years and the piece must be re-protected after professional cleaning.
DIY (do-it-yourself) upholstery cleaning can lead to fabric damage or mildew.
Never take the cushion pillows off for washing in your laundry or at a dry cleaner. Ethan Allen warns against this practice on the label under the seat cushions. Have a professional company clean them for you.
Using a small carpet cleaning machine is not usually a good idea, since you don’t have the training to identify the fibers in the covering and choose the right cleaning method.
Left without annual pro cleaning, many people need to have their chairs or sofas recovered years before they had expected their furniture to become worn and stained. It’s a worthy investment!

Get Your Area Rugs Cleaned In The Spring

Rug Cleaning Is Important Every Year

Did you know that moths swarm in the Springtime?  Yes, and these moths love to lay eggs in your area rugs. When they hatch, the larva  often feed on the wool and other natural fibers, causing a loss of  your favorite rugs an a mess in your home.

Get Them Cleaned At a facility, Not At Your Home

Thorough cleaning and washing cannot be done at your home. We at Four Seasons Rug and Upholstery Care offer the best, guaranteed service in Ventura County with full pick- up and delivery services available.

area rug cleaning camarillo

How often should area rugs be cleaned?

Carpet and rug manufacturers pretty much all concur that carpets and rugs should be cleaned annually. Our advice- for area rugs in a high- traffic area of your home or office- – every two years at a minimum. This will make them last longer while always looking beautiful.

In- between, vacuum at least weekly and don’t let a beater bar run over fringes or edges.

The History Of Spring Cleaning

Spring cleaning is the time set aside for deep cleaning in the Spring. It’s a time, after the winter, to get your home clean and ready for the year. Unless you happen to have hoarding tendencies, most people embrace the concept of Spring cleaning to some degree. But do you ever stop to consider why we would want Spring cleaning as part of our “yearly-to-dos”?

Camarillo Carpet Cleaning Expert Dan Traub

The History of Spring Cleaning

As Jewish custom goes, Passover is an event for cleaning. Its purpose is to remember when the Jewish people left Egypt, the Jewish slaves were hurriedly given unleavened bread prior to their leaving. For Jewish people, Passover has since become a time to clean every nook and cranny of the home to remove any bread morsel according to their custom. Jewish custom considers leaving bread crumbs during Passover an insult to God. Therefore, some attribute this to the tradition of Spring cleaning.

Many other cultures also embrace the concept of Spring cleaning. The Chinese and Iranian cultures also have a tradition. Homes are cleaned for the new year to keep bad luck away from the home and family. Good luck comes to people who obey this tradition. Additionally, Greece and many Orthodox countries clean the house completely during the first week of Great Lent.  Historical events and traditions aside, Spring cleaning is simple. Germs need to be removed. A clean home is a healthy, safe, happy home.

What about your carpet and rugs? The soil tracked into your home is filled with soot, grease and sticky substances from outside. Weekly vacuuming doesn’t cut it. And of course, if you spill or have a pet accident, a handy bottle of Four Seasons Spot Remover will help, but it’s not enough. Even if you carpet still looks good, carpet makers recommend yearly cleaning to remove soil build up. But we can help your carpet and rugs look as good as possible. Give us a call for a deep Spring cleaning on carpet, rugs or floors.
